Vintage Malahide Pottery Hand-Thrown Stoneware Puzzle Butter & Cheese Dome

This rare vintage mid-century stoneware dome was hand-thrown at the historic Malahide Pottery studio in Co. Dublin. Rather than a conventional lid, this genius piece is masterfully engineered as a two-part interlocking puzzle dome.

The potter carefully split the dome during the throwing process so when slid together the two halves flush-lock perfectly to create an enclosed cell for cheese or butter, while naturally allowing the stoneware to breathe. The exterior showcases a gorgeous hand-carved, sgraffito botanical leaf motif that aligns flawlessly across the puzzle seam to complete the artwork when assembled.

The underside rim bears the hand-incised studio mark: "Malahide Pottery." A marvelous conversation piece for any mid-century kitchen display or Irish pottery collection.

Condition: Good vintage condition. The interlocking puzzle mechanism functions smoothly and fits together exactly as intended.
